Search for Sphalerons : IceCube vs . LHC

چکیده
We discuss the observability of neutrino-induced sphaleron transitions in the IceCube detector, encouraged by a recent paper by Tye and Wong (TW), which argued on the basis of a Bloch wave function in the periodic sphaleron potential that such transitions should be enhanced compared to most previous calculations. We calculate the dependence on neutrino energy of the sphaleron transition rate, comparing it to that for conventional neutrino interactions, and we discuss the observability of tau and multi-muon production in sphaleron-induced transitions. We use IceCube 4-year data to constrain the sphaleron rate, finding that it is comparable to the upper limit inferred previously from a recast of an ATLAS search for microscopic black holes at the LHC with ∼ 3/fb of collisions at 13 TeV. The IceCube constraint is stronger for a sphaleron barrier height ESph & 9 TeV, and would be comparable with the prospective LHC sensitivity with 300/fb of data at 14 TeV if ESph ∼ 11 TeV. Search for Sphalerons in Proton-Proton Collisions
In a recent paper, Tye and Wong (TW) have argued that sphaleron-induced transitions in highenergy proton-proton collisions should be enhanced compared to previous calculations, based on a construction of a Bloch wave function in the periodic sphaleron potential and the corresponding pass band structure. Here we convolute the calculations of TW with parton distribution functions and simulations ...

We explore the capability of the IceCube/Deepcore array to discover signal neutrinos resulting from the annihilations of Supersymmetric WIMPS that may be captured in the solar core. In this analysis, we use a previously generated set of ∼ 70k model points in the 19-dimensional parameter space of the pMSSM which satisfy existing experimental and theoretical constraints. Our calculations employ a...

Astronomy and particle astrophysics with the IceCube Neutrino Observatory benefit from tau neutrino detection. Tau neutrinos produce distinct, nearly background free electromagnetic showers within the volume of IceCube. The search for tau neutrino extragalactic point sources requires accurate event reconstruction. Utilizing LED flashers within IceCube allows for the simulation and calibration o...

Since the early 1990’s, the South Pole station in Antarctica has been the site of the development and operation of the world’s first ice-Cherenkov neutrino telescopes, AMANDA and IceCube. The AMANDA telescope was completed in 2000 and has been used to search for the first high-energy neutrinos from beyond the earth. The successor to AMANDA, IceCube, will be a kilometre-scale neutrino and air sh...

IceCube is a kilometer-scale high energy neutrino telescope under construction at the South Pole, a second-generation instrument expanding the capabilities of the AMANDA telescope. The scientific portfolio of IceCube includes the detection of neutrinos from astrophysical objects such as the sources of the cosmic rays, the search for dark matter, and fundamental physics using a very large data s...
